1 08 Power News 1 | 2008 Eaton Power Quality Customer Newsletter editorial Dear Reader 2008 will be bigger than ever for Eaton's Power Quality business. Its product and service range has grown significantly during the past year. We launched the most powerful UPS in our product line the Powerware 9395. The new UPS ensures uninterrupted power supply in the most critical environments, including data centres, airports, hospitals and manufacturing sites. In 2007 Eaton also launched the industry's most scalable BladeUPS, meeting the needs of fast growing data centres. In addition to this Eaton has also started to manage entire data centre construction projects in the Nordic region. As for the smaller UPS side of the business, Eaton's acquisition of MGE Office Protection Systems has been a great success with both Powerware and MGE Office Protection System's now available from Eaton. In this edition of Powernews we take a closer look at the steadily growing Russian market. Serving this ever-changing country offers enormous challenges. I am proud to say that Eaton with its office and an extensive partner network spread all around the country has responded effectively to the challenges. Wishing you a successful New Year! Anita Putkinen Editor-in-Chief photo: istockphoto Russian UPS boom During the last few years the Russian UPS market has experienced unprecedented growth its size has almost tripled since 2000. According to experts and leading manufacturers of uninterrupted power systems, the UPS sector will only continue to expand in the coming years. The growth of the UPS market in Russia has been a result of the positive performance by the Russian economy. In 2007 it has surpassed all expectations and demonstrated GPD of more than seven per cent. Enormous capital inflow from oil export and booming oil prices served as basic incentive for such high economic showings. In return, this has filtered into the boosting business investments and household demands, which drives the construction, manufacturing and services sector. The country has also seen a significant increase in the telecommunication sector. Within the manufacturing sector, machinery and equipment production needed for housing construction, road building, large energy projects and office and computing equipment, enjoys the biggest share. With surging incomes, more available credits have expanded purchasing capacity and consumer demand, which has seen an expansion of the manufacturing and construction sectors in the country. Business activity and household demand has empowered a strong rise of service activities. Russia´s trade, transportation, financial services and real estate sectors have also demonstrated growth. An increase in energy consumption follows the economic growth. So, power demand in some regions is growing six per cent a year. This is where AC and DC power protection systems are coming in. news Royal Caribbean chooses Eaton yet again Independence of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship will use Powerware devices to secure uninterruptible power supply when it sails in 2008. The ship, scheduled to enter service next year weighs in at 160,000 gross tons and will join Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas as the largest cruise ships and passenger vessels ever built. She will be 339 m long, and will cruise at 21.6 knots (40 km/h). She is currently being built in the Aker Finnyards dry dock in Turku, Finland and will be based in Southampton, England. The cruiser requires uninterruptible power supply for a variety of security and entertainment purposes: emergency lighting, hotel computer system, fire detection, navigation equipment, interactive TV system, casino computer network and show control equipment to name a few. This requires over 30 UPS devices, including all the marine versions of Powerware 9 series. The biggest UPS, Powerware 9315 300kVA, protects the emergency lighting. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines also uses Powerware UPS solutions on board of Liberty of the Seas (2007), Freedom of the Seas (2006), Navigator of the Seas (2003), Mariner of the Seas (2002), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Voyager of the Seas (1999). This is presented over two days, through a dynamic combination of speakers, workshops and exhibits for specific market solutions. The organiser of the ICT Symposium is Belgacom Group, Belgium's reference provider of integrated telecommunication services. The Belgacom Group and other event partners displayed solutions in the two exposition halls, where PK Electronics and Eaton come in! Vaultex, Belgacom's data centre partner, requested PK Electronics to provide power protection for its fully operational computer room during the event, as unreliable power could lead to disaster. Eaton's Powerware 9355 30kVA Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and a dual generating set were installed to prevent power loss or interruption. The UPS and generator were on full display to the visitors. In addition, Eaton demo truck at the entrance to the event showed a working Hot Sync® UPS.
