22 Finnair Group For Finnair it is of prime importance that the company's employees perform their duties reliably and with high expertise. a contented workforce also ensures customer satisfaction. as the wellbeing of employees is the objective, particular attention is paid to occupational health and safety. Towards zero work accidents Finnair's operations are driven by a high-level flight safety culture, which is governed by the strict regulations of the aviation authorities. Work safety is approached in the same way. "In 2003 Finnair introduced the Zero Accidents concept, which stresses that work safety involves everyone, that we can learn from all hazardous situations, and that we must react immediately to them," says Finnair's Occupational Safety Manager Anna Melleri. Finnair's diverse working tasks and numerous different working environments set their own challenges for safety work. "There are working environments where particular attention must be paid to chemicals and noise, for example. Elsewhere, on the other hand, the focus is on mobility and the ergonomic transfer of heavy items. An aircraft represents a unique working environment, while some of our personnel do their work in offices," explains Melleri. model example of commitment to the Zero Accidents objective is Finnair Technical Services. In summer 2007 an overhaul of work safety was carried out in which all goods were placed in safe and efficient locations, the locations labelled and surplus items removed. At the same time, Technical Services introduced Safety Walks, which make the refurbished working environment even safer. Work supervisors make a Safety Walk every day, while unit managers make a Safety Walk weekly or monthly, depending on the size of the unit. "Technical Services has achieved very good results. These are encouraging, but we can't rest on our laurels; A the journey towards Zero Accidents is continuing," says Finnair Technical Services' Assistant Vice President Lasse Freden. O n the Group level, visible campaigns to promote work safety are conducted twice a year. With the themed campaigns, personnel are encouraged to identify risks, are reminded of safe working practices and are urged to care for their colleagues and the working environment. The theme of the 2008 spring campaign was tidiness and order. Information was disseminated using posters as well as via the internal weekly bulletin and the personnel magazine. "Good order in the workplace is important in terms of both work safety and operational efficiency. Order and tidiness increase the functionality, Highly visible accessories are important when working at an airport. Pictured are loaders Mika Hakku and Tomi Jarillo of Finnair Catering.
